The short stories shows how Hartman and Baptist meet and join forces to the benefit of both. Baptist is an escaped slave, whom killed his master. He would forever be a hunted man. Hartman was an indentured sailor who also killed his captain that forced him into being a sailor by fraud. They will learn to trust each other in time.
