Clara, when still single, had gone shopping with her mother, and they happened to spot Fernando on the other side of the street. When they waved at him, he abruptly stopped walking, balanced on one foot, stretched his neck forward, put one hand behind him to represent a tail, another in front of him as if it were a beak, and announced, "I'm an ibis." The two women giggled with embarrassment as pedestrians turned their heads to behold the strange spectacle. (p. 298)
