I’m almost 18 hours into this book and I don’t like it any better than I did at 30%.
-the magic is the centerpiece of the whole long-ass affair and yet it is so boring and pointless! Fucking match pairs??
-I don’t like any of the characters, for what I know about them, which isn’t much for 18 freaking hours
-the narration interruptions and footnotes are so jarring

I get that this is just one big metaphor for colonialism being bad, but is it really even metaphor if is plainly stated every 2 minutes? Why bother with the magic part? Even though I know it’s about colonialism, no new points are made, and I’d argue nothing about this whole overblown book even makes much of a case. China is being taken over by opium and minorities are used. That’s all she could think of?
