The lore is 10/10, everything I hoped for and more, but the pacing is awfully slow. People just travel... then you follow other people following the first people and so it goes. It's very much traditional fantasy albeit with darker tone. Hero's journey. I like it a lot but I'm unable to force myself to read it, struggling with even a chapter a day by this point. I'll return after some palette cleanser.

Sounds like something that will get you prepared for Malazan Book of the Fallen.

There aren't as many POVs here and the army's humor always made the travel parts in Malazan entertaining. Here you have the main character and her pursuers, that's all for now.
It would be more precise to compare Herald to LOTR or The Eye of the World, at least so far. Only this book has people eating angels and terrifying demons hiding in the dark corners of the world.
