On the day on which God called them to imitate Him in His own rest, they had no activity left other than direct acts of communion with God. What more could a sinless man and woman desire? What other purpose could the Sabbath have served in Paradise?

“On the Sabbath day, God has commanded us to spend the whole day in heaven, so to speak. While we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord (2 Cor. 5:6). We have not yet received our permanent dwelling place in our eternal homeland, yet on the Sabbath God allows us to visit heaven and return to this world with the glory of His presence shining from our faces.”

This means that the law of God is not only a reflection of the glory of God the Father, but also a transcript of the life and character of God the Son.

I’m really impressed by how he describes that the law drives us to the Lord:

“There is not one law of God that requires perfect, personal, and perpetual obedience in order to drive men to Christ and another law of God that requires imperfect, general, and occasional obedience as a rule of life.”

The law exists to drive us to Christ because we don’t keep it perfectly this side of heaven.

2 reasons for anxiety: fear that some great evil shall fall upon us & deprive us of something we value, & the fear that we shall not have the means to prevent such evils. Behind this lies the fact that our happiness rests in the things that we possess rather than in the Maker of heaven and earth, and that we have taken the care of our possessions into our own hands.

Sabbath-breaking is presented as one of the greatest causes of the weakness of the church and serves as a lightning rod that attracts the judgment of God to churches and nations.

In the nineteenth century, John Brown of Haddington wrote: “Is Sabbath breaking a very horrible crime?—A. Yes; it is a sin against great love, and the source of many other sins; God commanded a man to be stoned to death for gathering sticks on the Sabbath; and hath threatened and destroyed nations for the breach of it.”

A way the Church can “turn from their wicked ways” so that our land might be healed.
