Before conditioning:
Unconditioned stimulus (ucs) of food caused the unconditioned response (ucr) of salivating.

During conditioning:
the ucs is paired with the neutral stimulus (ns) of the bell, it leads to the ucr.

After conditioning:
The ns becomes a conditioned stimulus (cs) which causes a conditioned response (cr) of salivating.
