I can see how elements of these stories can appear racist (we're unlikely to get a new TV series of it without it becoming so 'modernised' as to be unrecognisable). But while a man of his time, I think Upfield was curious, engaged and intelligent. I particularly like that Boney's "Call of the Bush" is celebrated, not disparaged.

Upfield was himself a boundary rider, and you can tell. His stories feel so authentic.
