Joe's soul was in a nymphs body, and so he did what nymphs do, lol. He couldn't get his barbarian body back, but now his soul is in a more blessed version of his original body. My memory is a little rusty, but I thought that Ruddygore said in the first book that they if they returned to Earth, they could only return to the moments before their death. But, now they're on Earth after much time has passed after that.
