I started this book when my doctors placed me on the UNOS lung transplant recipient list 29 days ago. I thought I would have time to finish it before my surgery, but I got the call only 5 days after listing. Now, 24 days post-transplant, I continue to read this book and marvel at the small and large miracles, and the ingenuity of doctors over the last 100 years, that have made saving my life possible. So inspiring!

I finally got to a passage on lung transplant. A whole pocket of tension I hadn’t realized was inside my chest opened up and released when I read it. Finally, something directly about me. It wasn’t a fairytale: lungs continue to have the poorest outcomes. But they’ve improved so much, and I am praying and working to be in the minority percentile who survives long term, to have time with my beautiful family.
