How do people make meaning out of suffering, especially when their suffering is utterly meaningless?

How does a young child reckon love and loyalty to a parent with their cruelty?

Yes, it is grotesque, but necessarily so thus far. I'm enjoying each turn as we learn something one of the unreliable narrators knew that another did not. I definitely see why this book is so popular.
