Finished book 2 and while I’m enjoying it so far there are just enough minor bits that I’m annoyed by. Robin wouldn’t have grown up speaking Mandarin, he would have only been speaking in Cantonese to his family and by all accounts it doesn’t seem that his family had money to send him to school or have a private tutor for him. And why would he go Melaka to study Chinese at ACS?!

For a book about languages I expect the author to get things right. For heavens sake 鸡心 doesn’t sound anything like 记性 in Cantonese it is ONLY TRUE IN MANDARIN.
And for an author with good research skills, HOW ON EARTH IS ACS A PROTESTANT SCHOOL? A simple google search tells me they are Methodist. I’m not even religious but come on.
