“Uttering (or writing) sentences in the course of telling a story differs from uttering sentences in the course of reporting an actual event; one is not, in the former case, as one is in the latter, asserting, that is claiming the truth of, the sentences one utters” (72). And it is not so straightforward that rules of logic should apply to both even if they intuitively do.
