Having read about 50% of the book by now I feel like I have a good idea of the storytelling mechanisms. Trying to understand the mixed reviews on this… I think it boils down to a matter of expectations and the marketing on this book. I understood this to be a memoir and am getting pretty much what I expected in that respect, albeit with more microhistory than I thought.
