It's crazy that even when schools did teach history they left out how utterly monstrous the English criminal law system was to Catholics, for hundreds of years. It had no real object other than the destruction of the faith. Suspicion of being Catholic was sufficient to dispossess you of all your land, give it to the closest protestant, and land you and your family in jail indefinitely awaiting bail (ransom).

Pious and virtuous English aristocracy being stripped of their holdings and titles and new occupants selected by their willingness to partake in psychopathic destruction of society and squirming obsequiousness to power really explains so much of the modern world.

Crazy how well this jives with Bellocs thesis that England (London particularly) is the gaping wound out of which modernity flows. Early modern England was an insane asylum run by deeply evil people who really had no higher goals than crass sensible pleasure.
