Taking another long break here like I did at 20% instead of quitting outright.
I love these characters but this book is a slog to get through. It's disjointed and mixed up. The author refers to elements that have never been introduced and sometimes changes subject mid-sentence.
Reading this thing can feel like you're having a stroke.

I feel like I'm enjoying this book, but it's taking me a long ass time to get through it.

This book starts badly, but gets better if you can force yourself to read past the rough patch.

Jacob Proffitt Yeah, that's what eventually broke me. I was less patient than you are and wasn't able to persevere.

Beth Is this something 🤔 an editor would help with?

Dave Stone Beth wrote: "Is this something 🤔 an editor would help with?"

YES! Absolutely.
That is a big part of an editors job is to make the author choose, Did you mean this, or that.
Everybody on earth has annoying habits like tapping your fingers or loudly sucking your teeth. An editors job is to point out to the author where they don't even notice they are doing that before the readers all quit or strangle them.
This book definitely lacked an editor.

Maybe? A good editor who can coach past structural and pace issues could do it. But they'd have to be trusted by the author and collaborative about the feedback.
