Why is it always the chracters that I find most interesting that get kicked out of the narrative?

Just skim-reading now 'cause ... eh. Kinda want to know how it ends but I'm not particularly interested either. I really wanted to like this but either it was completely wrong timing on my part or the characters really are mere names.

I don't think I'll ever get used to people calling others they barely know "theirs" ...
