Mayer doesn't respond. /
He didn't tell him that when he arrived from Germamy /
- from Rimpar, Bavaria - everyone stared at his shoes. /
If they look at your feet /
it means that you come from far away. /
He could have told his son that. /
But he didn't. /
He just smiled. /
These days he speaks very little.

there on Wall Street where they seem to sell /everything: iron, fabric, coal /
every type of thing you can imagine; in reality, /there's no trace of it. /
There's no iron there's no fabric there's no coal. /
There's nothing there. /

EMANUEL: And yet, a miracle everything is there./
There's no iron, but the word: IRON, /
no fabric, but the word: FABRIC, /
no coal, but the word: COAL.
A temple of words.

message 1: by Rodrigo (new)

Rodrigo This reminds me of James and the idea of feet, walking and running that's so present in James' telling and so absent in every other character. The constant conscience of the state of his legs and feet and his understanding of his own readiness to flee

message 2: by Emilie (new) - added it

Emilie Yesss that’s so true! I love how bodily the description is here of being out of place & haven’t made the connection to James though ofc many texts on slavey focus intensely on a physical displacement
