1842: Toronto demanded that he speak English, La Fontaine retorted: "He has asked me to make my first speech in the Chamber in a tongue other than my mother tonguel! I refuse with all my energy to make the speech in English. I protest solemnly against the cruel injustice of the Act of Union that prohibits the mother tongue of half of the population of Canada. I owe it to my fellow countrymen and I owe it to myself."

The debts of the two colonies were also consolidated into a single debt, which represented another injustice since Upper Canada had incurred a debt of 1.2 million pounds (construction). Lower Canada owed only 95,000 pounds because of the quarrel over subsidies. Article 41 that made English the only official language of government, act known as "The 2nd conquest".
