Alex knew these brownies wouldn’t be laced with laxatives like the last ones they’d given Dunphy.

Alex had always been shockingly protective and demonstrative with her, even in public. They’d burned so hot together, like thermite. She’d never felt anything like it. It scared her that he could still elicit such a strong, primal reaction from her even after all the damage he’d done and all the time they’d spent apart.

He cupped a warm hand against her cheek, cradled the side of her face. “That’s right, baby. You stay with me. I’m right here. You just look at me and hold on.” His voice was hoarse, on the edge of breaking. The agonized look on his face tore at her, because it confirmed what she’d already feared. She wasn’t going to make it.

I finished the first book. The 1st part made me get teary-eyed and then again later when D is injured. Very emotional, fast-paced, and good.
