It's been a long time since I've experienced a story with a more monotonous cadence of plot beats. It's literally just, dream worm, talk about Jo, journal entry, go someplace, dream worm again, repeat. I'm halfway done so far. Praying the rest of the book switches things up. And soon. 😵‍💫

Also. Look! A plot! It took almost 200 pages, but I'm finally starting to see one materialize.

Wait so Bridge **isn't** dating Dom? I went halfway through the book thinking they were her partner. But I guess they're just best friends??? What???

I can tell that the author knew what kind of story she wanted to write. I'm still not sure if she remembered to write a story that people would want to read.

I'm starting to see the conceit of the narrative here, so the only question is how the rest of the book will handle it. I can see things getting tedious pretty quickly if it keeps going on like this without freshening up the pace or progressing the mystery. If I'm halfway in and I'm still being shown more confusing alternate memories with no further clarity on what Bridge is working towards, I'll be pissed off.

I bought this because I liked the cover and the premise and because it seemed to have the "quirky, introspective tone" I mention loving in my profile. That seems to be holding true for now, though the buildup is slow and I don't like one of the main characters. The dialogue sometimes reaches for quirkiness, often with a back-and-forth cadence I don't love, but the prose is fluid and strong.

I'm not sure if this is meant to be YA because it's been a whole chapter and this fuckwit hasn't had a single line that wasn't an idiotic borderline-nonsequitur of a quip. The main character of the book is *dating* this tool. The next chapter is from their perspective. I'm retaining my optimism for now, but I'm not sure how well it bodes that Lauren Beukes thinks a character like this would be remotely appealing.

If someone was this unserious in the event of my mother's literal death I would curse them for a thousand lifetimes
