I have a terrible and complicated relationship with my mother. So far this book makes me want to cry, thinking about her. I’m hoping I enjoy the rest of the prose, though I’m unsure if it will keep making me feel this way or make me relate to her. It also reminds me of my fiancés childhood, and his mom, and their own complicated relationship. Great so far.

As a woman who wants to be a parent and who is terrified of infertility, this section made me so sad. Hearing how her abortion went, her conflicted feelings, and how it made them ready to be parents together… all so inspiring. And sad. Nearly cried. We want kids ourselves, and have been trying for over a year.

Her descent into a sex craved period reminds me of a brief stint in college the two weeks before my freshman year. I wasn’t doing it every day like she was, and it ended much faster for me, but with her life story so far I can understand it lasting so long. Peeking ahead were getting to when she meets her husband, hopefully we hear how her life turned around.

This feels less and less like being specifically about Daphne being a bad mom and more about Sue being a really horny adulterous adult. I’m hoping something major will shift as the end of the book approaches.

This “affair” section was grossly long but I can see why she included it. She was a dumb teen with a horrible upbringing and no one to save her. Glad she used protection and didn’t have his kids, glad she was dumb enough like her mom to float away and out of his grasp. The giving of Lolita to her made me sick, and that she wasn’t educated enough to understand the true meaning…

The story in fragments of her life are so sad. I had to take care of my mom over a few years during surgeries and I remember taking her potty pots upstairs to empty and tripping over her trash, having to scrub her pee out of the carpet. I was maybe 10. I relate to this too much.

Made it through a few more chapters.
While I’m beginning to understand why some may have rated this low due to the literal CHILD discovering orgasm through her clearly terrible mom & other influences, it’s very true to a child being naive and being influenced by those around her in a VERY bad way from a super early age.
