The Salisbury Western Carolinian contained a “recipe for the bit of a snake” in a 1821 edition: ‘As soon as possible apply the mouth of a bottle, nearly filled with distilled spirits (whiskey or brandy) to the wounds; the spirits will extract the poison and give immediate relief.’”
