Reveling in their newfound independence, the West Floridians chose to extend their liberty to Mobile AL and Pensacola FL. Volunteers set out to take those small garrisons. Meanwhile, James Madison is caught in a bind. Madison believed West Florida was a part of the Louisiana Purchase. Since the US Congress would not be in session until December, Madison sent a secret authorization to "take" West Florida by force.

Mississippi Territory presented a problem in Congress. Southern slave states would continue to tip the balance of power against the northern states. Not until December 1817 was Mississippi Territory divided into states Alabama and Mississippi. Finally the eastern past of West Florida was recognized as belonging to Mississippi. (A long time to live in limbo.)

War of 1812 Andrew Jackson not only won the Battle of New Orleans but also pushed east to Mobile and Pensacola thus wresting all of West Florida from the Spanish and then pushed further east determined to clain all of East Florida for US. Gained all but St. Augustine. Meanwhile, Mississippi and half of West Florida east of Pearl River waited for Congress's decision.

January thru April 1811 bills dealing with the lands of West Florida went from House to Senate back to House and finally dividing the land between Orleans and Mississippi and also granting Louisiana statehood. Mississippi waited for that title as they dealt with war against Creek Indians, finally subdued under leadership of Andrew Jackson.

Serious debate in Congress during 1811 about what to do with the "new" land acquisition. Leave it whole. Divide it by giving part to Louisiana and part to Mississippi, which was asking for statehood. Give all to one or the other. Messages of appeals from West Florida for swift action because they had $ 20,000 debt that needed assumption. Financial crisis. Land titles at stake.Troubled months of anxiety. No email.

October 27 James Madison issued a proclamation for annexation of West Florida after news of independence reached Washington. The largest slave rebellion of 200 in Orleans was inspired by the nearby rebellion. Bitter acrimony between the Federalists and Madison. Dec10, 1810, the flag of the new Republic was lowered, ending life of the young republic with many dissenting opinions.

Chapter 12 FINALLY the battle at Fort San Carlos in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which lasted less than a half hour and caused the deaths of three in the Spanish garrison on September 23, 1810 and followed the next day by a formal Declaration of Independence from Spain and the formation of the Republic of Northwest Florida, all land that is now a part of Louisiana.

This book is so interesting but very difficult to follow on audio format. No maps, Spanish, and French names. I've found I must relisten to fully grasp this history. So I have started again!
