The writing is less choppy now, so I am convinced it was a stylistic choice to suit what was happening in the narrative at the time.

Starting to get into it a bit more, the writing seems less disjointed. I suspect that was deliberate to fit the circumstances at the start, but I found it hard going. Bit behind schedule, but Dracula finishes on Wednesday so I'll have plenty of time to catch up before book club.
