"Lonesome Dove" is arguably my favorite novel of all time. I read the sequel a long time ago, and remember thinking it was so inferior to its predecessor that I regretted having read it. But something about this re-read is making me appreciate McMurtry's far darker sequel a bit more. I can't say that it surpasses or is even as good as the original, but I can barely put it down. And that's a good sign.
