“Jesus’ Gethsemane prayer wasn’t answered in the manner he prayed it. The cup of suffering was not taken from him. …[Jesus] also endured the silence of God.

“A God with a personality and a will is so unpredictable. Maybe it would be easier if we had a God who worked like an operating system designed to deliver predictable results based on the buttons I push. But that’s not the God revealed in Jesus.”

I keep remembering this book, getting so pumped, reading a few chapters, and then completely forgetting about it again. It has made it to four different states with me, and I’m still barely halfway through. But it’s so good. Determined to finish it this time. But not at all a book to rush through. Hang with me🥴

“Resist the urge to decide if this practice of silent prayer is ‘working.’ Dont evaluate if youre ‘getting anything out of it.’ Simply trust that the practice of a couple centuries’ worth of saints, and the practice of Jesus himself, might have a place in your life too. Practice silence as a sacrificial offering to God. It’s about giving something of yourself to God, not getting something from God.”
