Stories are hit and miss, but THE MARKED TREE might be my favorite so far, due to my fondness of revenge stories.

The African-Cuban-Spanish heroine of Robert Louis Stephenson's STORY OF A FAIR CUBAN is an interesting mix of a brave young woman of admirable intellect, and a reinforcement of the old, racist idea that dark natives are superstitious, but give them white blood & they're only half superstitious. OTOH, the story is very anti-slavery & adventurous. A product of its time, but definitely worth a read.
