This book is so incredibly good and ahead of its time. It’s really a must read for all. The detail and research and beauty and fascination are beyond anything.

30 pages in if JCP had written all his books with such attention he’d be considered one of the greatest of all time.

At last I return for a second read of JCP’s great work of magical realism! Some say it’s his best, we will see if my views change on the reread. Is there anything better than knowing you will shortly be in that world of pure reading happiness?

I've seen a few people consider this to be the ur-Powys novel.

It’s not just that it makes every other book of magical realism and fantasy pale in comparison. The richness and depth of allusion, the truly mind-bending beauty, richness and depth of certain portions (the Myrrdin Wyllt chapter the best so far), while it takes a willingness to accept richness and complexity far beyond that contained in any other similar novel, it’s so so worth it. Anyway it’s not at all like his other well known books but it is in the new direction in his writing he took after Owen Glendower and Morwyn and incredibly all of the bad things in those books he’s expunged. If only he’d found his sanity sooner!
