In this book, the main antagonist is the "Titan Lord" named Kronos. Kronos is the Titan of time, and he is able to manipulate many people into being under his control. He controls one of the most powerful half-bloods at Percy's camp, Luke, to become his new body. Luke helps Kronos rise and become very powerful once again in hopes that he will rule the world as Kronos, but he doesn't realize that he is brainwashed.

In this book, the main character is named Percy Jackson. This is the third book that follows Percy's adventures every summer. Because Percy Jackson is a Demi-God, he has special abilities in water granted by his father, Poseidon. Percy is a fifteen year old boy with normal human friends, but he also has many other Demi-God friends as well as a satyr and a cyclops. His special abilities help him complete his quests.

The main conflict of this book is that the goddess, Artemis and Percy Jackson's best friend, Anasbeth are kidnapped and being held captive under the weight of the sky. The Titan general, Atlas, had them captured and brought to him. He forced them to take his usual spot of holding up the sky as punishment. Percy, Grover, Thalia, Zoe, and Bianca have to travel west by foot from NY to SF to save their friends.
