don’t understand where the author is going with this? She seems to be conflating sexual violence with individual choice to wear religious attire which I don’t get. however, the third chapter is actually quite good and should’ve been at the beginning - highlighting the SA, oppression and abuse Arab women suffer in society and from the state especially during the revolution/arab spring. M

Eltahawy is a good writer but is jumping to conclusions on what face veiling and hijab means… not entirely sure why the meaning must always be inferred as a reflection of patriarchal misogyny in society or why the right to wear hijab or niqab clashes with feminist theory in her view. She seemingly wishes to present a different way of thinking but is presenting the same rehashed arguments we’ve heard before…
