It's interesting to read about what american people thought of things during the turn of the century - about certain occupations, education, and so on. And people then we're looking ahead to a future they believed would be brighter than it was then. Things were changing greatly then, and so it is now but It does feel like a viewpoint that exists now. The book feels a little winding though.

The prose is engaging. The hamiltons and the trasks are going to be important, but who are these new other people. The description of the salinas valley is breathtaking.
