Jim has been sent back in time millions of years and is trapped in organic metal. The metal preserves him for those same millions of years until he returns to the present as the statue in the ballroom he had been attacked in. This creates a paradox where he was trapped in the metal, but living on earth at the same time. Paradoxes are fun, but unnecessary in this sort of story.
