Emma Sea have you read this before? I love this book, but it must have been 15 years ago I read it. I wonder if it stands up?

No, it's the first time I'm reading it. I saw the film some 15 years ago and liked it, but the details have faded. I remembered there was a lesbian element, though, and I wanted to see how it was portrayed in the book.

I keep reminding myself that the book is set in the '20s, and that Ninny Threadgoode (telling Idgy and Ruth's story to Evelyn in 1986) is a ninety-year-old, god-fearing woman, and very much a product of her time. Also, the feminist themes are dated, but I'm still enjoying Evelyn's journey to empowerment.

Emma Sea I have one whole bookcase which is just full of my "favorites" like this, but I literally haven't picked up a single one of them in... ten years? Maybe it's time to let them go.

Lenore I have a lot of those too, like Stranger in a Strange Land or The Dispossessed, which I haven't picked up in over 20 years. Frankly? I don't see myself rereading them. There was a reason I loved them at the time. Ignorance is bliss?

Emma Sea I think I have Stranger in a Strange Land in there too :/
in this delightful 1970s cover

Lenore Jealous! I have the paperback with the blue cover.

Chris I remember that cover! Altho the edition I read it in was the black cover with the two heads and "GROK": Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein . Pretty sure I don't have a copy of that anymore.

I have a copy of the edition I first read Babel-17 in: Babel-17 merge 1 by Samuel R. Delany - I reread it a couple of years ago and still enjoyed it, even if I enjoyed it differently.

Lenore I should create a shelf called "old favourites I've five-starred on GR but haven't picked up in 10+ years"

Probably we could all use such a shelf. :)

BABEL 17!! wow, I'd forgotten all about that book. Rydra Wong was a real role model for me when I was about 10. I wanted to be a beautiful starship captain too

ETA even though I read this copy and therefore by any logic apparently wanted to be a blonde 70s porn star

KatieMc I turn to Fannie Flagg for comfort reads.

Chris @Emma: Oh, I might have a copy with that cover, too - I buy it used to give to people all the time. Such a profound concept, how the language you know shapes everything, even what you can think about.

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man is my favorite of hers. I just love how it ends. I love the MC's voice.

yep, completely. when I did my MA and actually starting reading philosophy I instantly became so much happier because I found that there were words and terms for a lot of the feelings I'd had, but wasn't able to articulate. Language can be knowledge can be freedom, but it works in reverse, too.
