Just finished the second novella, about Old Jim. I’m very confused and slightly morose. I don’t really fully understand what happened but the end was written very beautifully? In these books it becomes difficult to know what is metaphor and what is “real”, and I suppose that’s partially the point. But god I’m excited to keep reading.

Things are picking up. The Forgotten Coast had something “off” about it even well before Area X formed on top of it. But why? What is the root of this phenomenon?

I have finished the first section and so far it seems VanderMeer has done it again! The first part of the book initially felt clinical and boring as it was presented in the form of biology expedition notes. But, true to form, VanderMeer used 68 pages to plunge me into the dark mystery of the Forgotten Coast, and it was chilling. I can’t wait to begin part 2!
