The author states California never promoted itself to the world...yet people move here in droves. This is not quite correct. That's what tourism marketing does. It promotes visits from other places. Reiser even states that the soldiers who came through San Francisco on their way to duty overseas decided to come back to San Francisco at the end of their service. Because...they visited....!
