I am in the preparations of starting my newest novel (Hills of Innocence Trilogy #3) and I wanted to hear ya'll give some advice first.
My main character, Fawn, must change her name part way through the novel to Ivy. The characters she lives with know her only as Ivy. So do I still call her Fawn throughout the book, and just let them call her Ivy? Or do I change everything to Ivy, until she re-assumes her real name?

Rachel :) Hmm that's tricky. I'd say stick with Ivy until she resumes her real name.

Thanks for reply! I think I agree with you. I was kinda thinking along the same lines (wouldn't the other way be a little confusing?), but just wanted to get others input before I started. :)

Faith Oh, that's a tough one. ;) I think you could do it either way. I've read books where characters change their name or go by an alias for a time, but in the narrative they're still referred to by their original name. But then again, calling her Ivy until she resumes her real name may make it easier to understand for the reader. ;)

Looking forward to the new book! ^_^

Ah, yeah. I can't recollect reading any book with this situation...so I wasn't sure.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to writing it. :)

Bethany Willcock I once did something similar in one of my books; my main character had to go into witness protection and changed her name from Julia to Veronica. I found it easier to call her by her new name (after all, that was her name, now, legally) just until she was able to come out of witness protection and could change back to Julia again. It makes the story less complicated, in my opinion :)

That makes sense. I think it will be easier not only for the reader, but for me, too. I definitely think I'll change everything. :)

One more question, though *cringe*. Although Fawn (now Ivy) will be living in a different home with people who know her only as Ivy, she still has one friend that she has contact with throughout the story, who knows her from a child, and therefore still calls her Fawn.
Which starts making everything a little confusing. I didn't even think of this until just now. Should she insist he call her Ivy? Which seems a little pointless in light of their situation (which I won't fully explain for the sake of spoilers). Or do I jump back into calling her Fawn, only to switch again when their scene ends?

All a little complicated, don't you think? *lets out breath* But I love my story line, so I don't really want to give it up. I'll just have to find the easiest way to make it work.

If you got anymore ideas, please let me know! :)

Bethany Willcock I think that since that's the case you should stick with Ivy for the most part, but when this friend is talking to her he should call her Fawn. It makes it more realistic. But perhaps if he is talking about her, or to her when there's other people around, he should then call her Ivy like everyone else.

Ah, okay. That makes sense, too. I appreciate your advice; it was most helpful! :)
