Full info, as that limit does NOT apply to comments (which is very weird!)
I wrote up some of my favorites books of the year for my work book club! In no particular order:
An Immense World by Ed Yong (about how animals perceive the world, the best nonfiction book I read this year, hands down)
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez (hard to describe fantasy with a unique format)
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (Gothic-esque tale with magic set during the Spanish Inquisition)
The Searcher/The Hunter by Tana French (set in rural Ireland, story about family and community, and what it is to be an insider... or an outsider, currently a duology)
Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton (post-apocalyptic sci-fi murder mystery)
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati (retelling the story of a queen from Ancient Greek mythology)
A Memory Called Empire / A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (sci-fi political thriller set in the heart of a spacefaring empire, a duology)
The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb (fantasy trilogy bildungsroman with magic, swords, and political intrigue)
There is a Door in this Darkness by Kristin Cashore (contemporary YA about grief/hope set during 2020-2021ish)
The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske (historical romance set in Edwardian England but with magic)
The Death I Gave Him by Em. X. Liu (rough retelling of Hamlet but with mad scientists)
Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik (short story collection, most are fantasy, one of my favorites was the Pride and Prejudice retelling where Elizabeth Bennett has a dragon)
