I think the “need” for spice superseded the way our MCs have been characterized. It’s a beautiful live scene, but having it as early as it is, and in the way that it started, just didn’t feel true to the characters.

A super start! I love the way the author uses James’ position as a sailor to say larger things about life. And the chapter ended in a twist that made me gasp. 😯. How did she get me to care so much about the characters in ONE chapter?!?
