Somehow, I felt we weren’t talking about Gideon or Jinx anymore, but about Miss Sadie. It was is that moment, when I saw the weight of age and pain weighing down on her, every creak of the rocking chair sounding as if it was coming from her very bones, that I had a revelation. As much as I had a need to hear her story, she had a need to tell it. It was as if the story was the only balm that provided any comfort.
