A good reflection of how insignificant we as citizens can feel in politics, thus just accepting the priviliges handed by us because we feel our voice won't be heard. It won't matter. The reluctant mindset shift of the MC is therefore so understandable, but also so necessary.

Did not expect this drastic turn of events

Most hypocritical thus far:
"The problem is that the Chinese have convinced themselves that they're the most superior nation in the world," he said. "They insist on using the word yi to describe Europeans, though we've asked them to use something more respectful, as yi is a designation for barbarians."
"You'd be in favor of violence?"
"It'd do well to teach them a lesson. China is a nation of semi-barbarious people."

This reminds me of myself sometimes. You're so busy with school, and living your life, that you sometimes do not notice what is going on in the world until reality pops your bubble. A very good reflection how the people last affected by world problems, the rich & the privileged, can be very ignorant (sometimes even unintentionally).

The amount of knowledge and research that went into this is amazing
