Ramanujan and Pi - Jonathan M. Borwein and Peter B. Borwein, Scottish mathematicians, discuss today’s wide application of one of Srinivasa Ramanujan’s (1887-1920) discoveries , a way of finding the value of pi (p. 647). The symbol, pi, was introduced in 1706 by the English mathematical writer William Jones and popularized by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in the 18th century (p. 652). Archimedes proposed a method to calculate pi, based on inscribed and circumscribed polygons, which was used until the mid-17th century (p. 653). The development of calculus, largely by Newton and Leibniz, made it possible to calculate pi much more expeditiously by means of derivatives and trigonometric functions (p. 653). Iterative methods to calculate pi using modular equations was foresaw by Ramanujan (p. 657).
