The plot structure of this book compared to the first book in the series is greatly differing in the beginning, but then becomes very similar near the end. The main similarity lies between the trio going through a realm vastly different from their home region. They then use the belt obtained from Leif's father to find the next stone. After that, they defeat a creature who is guarding the stone, then they move on.
