An interesting character in this book is the best friend of the main character Percy Jackson. He is named Grover, and is a satyr. A satyr is half human and half goat. Grover is unsure of himself, and is always nervous about something. In this book, Grover changes from a misfit satyr to one of the satyrs on the head council. Grover doesn't know how to handle his new responsibilities, and he is unable to adapt soon.

The main conflict of the book is that Percy Jackson and three of his friends are trying to find the creator of the Labyrinth, a shape-shifting maze which is impossible to navigate. The creator, Deadalus is in hiding, and both Percy and the evil army of Kronos are trying to find him. His knowledge of the maze would help either army use it for their advantage in the war. Deadalus is well hidden, and hard to find.
