The first few pages are like a plunge in ice water. We’re viewing the world through the eyes of a girl who has known nothing more than the horrible things that are happening to her. Its presented very matter of factly and that’s the way it is. The way she escapes and finds contentment in the ideal of Shug Avery illustrates the psychological phenomenon that allows us, mainly children, to cope with circumstance.
