I find Artyom to be a passive character. His problems are solved by random people, who disappear as soon as they no longer have a purpose, which gets repetitive and boring after a while. Rather than driving the story forward, as the main character should, he's simply reacting to it, rarely contributing beyond trying to get to the next station. It feels like the author simply wanted to show off the world he created.
