Thoughts on the stories (see in rest comments):

• Metzengerstein: In theory I should like this. Intense, yet moronic, aristocratic rivalries? A horse that could be the actual devil, but also maybe just a normal horse because horses are… like that? Dramatic estate fires? I should love this. And yet. 5/10

• The Duc de l’Omelette: my distant memories of high school French are not adequate for this. help. 4/10

Toviel • A Tale of Jerusalem: I genuinely can’t tell if this story is antisemitic or not. I certainly hope not, because it’s one of his better comedic stories. 7/10

• Loss of Breath: Poet’s writing has an interesting relationship with domestic violence; while most people are probably more familiar with his horror stories touching the subject, it extends to his comedy, too. A man can’t disrespect a woman in Poe’s world without immediate repercussions. Also, Windenough and the narrator must have made out sloppy style. 6/10

• Bon-Bon: I, too, would probably have the misfortune of getting the hiccups in the middle of a deal with the devil. 10/10 for relatability.

• Four Beasts in One: Poe really liked his last sentence zingers, didn’t he? 7/10

• Ms in a Bottle: LIVING GHOST SHIP LIVING GHOST SHIP LIV— 20/10

Toviel The Assignation: I, too, whisked to be whisked off my feet into the private abode of a handsome, but tragic, Venetian. 9/10

The Unparalleled Adventure of one Hand Pfaall: I spent the entire time wishing I was reading Jules Verne instead. 5/10.

Lionizing: I hate Poe’s comedic writing. 4/10

Shadow — A Parable: Too short, but essentially a first draft of the Masque of Red Death. Love doomed party vibes. 7/10

Silence — A Fable: Cool setting, but what was even the point? 5/10
