I will be checking in here for a while longer, but am migrating to Storygraph. Hope you all can join me there! "GR without Amazon" and hopefully without all the bugs.

Not yet willing to give up on GR, but I am very curious about whether Storygraph can offer something better.
StoryGraph lacks all the social features of GR, though. I've lightly been using it for years. I cannot even find you there. I habour some hopes for Hardcover (especially since they're going open-source next month) but for now, GR it is for me.
To Wulf: I have had a few other friends describe what you have shared about StoryGraph. They have described it, in short, as "lacking." Would you mind keeping us informed about Hardcover, particularly if you end up having any real success or satisfaction with it? The part that gets me about any of these options is our greed, as humans. I'm getting jaded enough to wonder now how anything good will last for long before someone buys it and ruins it.

It's also still lacking most social aspects that are important to me (e. g. these very comments!); there's just a "like" button for now.
They have a roadmap, though, that looks promising and I like their style (even though some might consider it somewhat gaudy).
I agree about the greed part. That's why I try to use and support only free and open-source (F/OSS) platforms and projects these days. Those are basically impossible to sell off but can grow into amazing and wonderful things (cf. Linux :) ).
On the other hand, while I admire people who resist the pull of very real riches like the VLC (F/OSS media player) maintainer who has refused “several tens of millions of Euro”; for such amounts I'd have sold it immediately to once and for all secure the future of my family and me.
I believe each and every one of us has their price. That price may be very, very high but there is a "tipping point" that, if and once reached, will override most other concerns.
Thanks, Wulf, for this input. I'll be paying attention to feedback on both of these sites.I am super repelled by corporate greed, and I think it has ruined almost everything I've loved in my lifetime. People think that what we've got going on these days is really the "bee's knees," and I think, "Oh, please." I'm so very grateful that I grew up knowing "mom and pop" health food stores, bookstores and record shops. These big businesses have NOTHING on those, and I feel truly sorry for our young people, including my own kids. They know they're getting cheated, and I hope they can flip this whole world upside down and get it right side up again.
Been there. "GR without Amazon" - True.
"GR without Bugs" - Partly true.
"GR without Friends" - Sadly VERY true.
All the best though!
It has barely any social aspect and doesn't prioritise reviews. It's best for stats if that's what you're into. I just wish someone could recreate Goodreads but without the bugs and with a better aesthetic. How is every tech "entrepreneur" not understanding that?
Anyone sharing my interest in a more "social" Hardcover may want to "thumbs up" https : // roadmap DOT hardcover DOT app/feature-requests/posts/being-able-to-comment-on-the-feed-updates-
I tried StoryGraph briefly and was put off by lack of social aspect (maybe things changed, but it’s a lonely desert that could give you stats and graphs for which I could not care less) and emphasis on “mood” reads and their template/prompts for review writing. It is great for buddy reads though, a feature I’d love to see on GR. There’s no issue of spoilers since it blocks any comments coming from the percentage of the book read further than you’ve read. I wish GR had something like that. But other than that I didn’t find anything there that I liked.
Anyway, hopefully you won’t be fully gone from here…
