Mr. Craven remembered Mary because Martha's mother had stopped him on the Moors and talked about her. He offered Mary a governess and whatever she needed but she only asked for her piece of earth.
I think it is more evident in the book that Mary fancied Dickon. How she exalted his features and directly asked him if he liked her. I am eager to see how they expand more on their relationship.

Things that are different from the 90's movie:
Mary's parents and Ayah, died of cholera. The servants upon learning of the disease, forgot about her and fled. Mr. Lennox, was Mr. Craven's wife's brother. Martha wrote to Dickon for him to go and buy tools and seeds for Mary, that's how she met him. Martha's mother bought Mary the rope. Ben Weatherstaff was rather antipathic towards Mary. Mr. Craven had no dogs.
