Finished the first book a few days ago, stayed up too late on several nights because I couldn't put it down. The descriptions of animal sacrifices are occasionally a bit too gruesome for me (pet-owner issue, prefer the human sacrifices), but the setting of the ancient Aztec empire with gods and magic actually being real is unique enough to power through

One thing that irks me though is the word 'adobe'. I had to look up what it looked like (context clues from the book did make it obvious that it was a building material), and then learned the word comes from Spanish. This means the book's characters would not have used that word. Then again, I believe the writer is French and the translation I'm reading is in English so it's not a legit problem or whatever (mostly just annoying to have that in the back of my head and now likely forever associated with the word).
