Gerda had went through devastating time. As her family was seperated from her due to the casue of war, and many of her friends had died. As the war had ended life became better for her especially when she met an American soldier who also is Jewish named Kurt mad e life better for Gerda again. Kurt had treated Gerda very well and took care of her and to Gerda she felt human once again.Life became well for in America

Gerda has met with lots of people, ilse has became one of her best friends, Gerda's father has been teaching her other types of languages as well. Gerda has also discovered that Arthur is no save as he is in Russia writting letters to her. The theme that I have read about this book is that she explains how flowers relate to her life especicially on pg 43, unfortuanately she rejected Abeck as he goes to War

So much has already happened in the authors life. her whole family as well as her self is affected bt the war that is goin on, The German forces are taking over more and more territories
